Key points to remember when teaching life skills:

  1. The workbook follows the outline of the Discovery process. It is crucial that you understand what Discovery, or Discovering Personal Genius, is before beginning to teach life skills. The process of these lessons and workbook is for you and your student to identify their specific skills, interests, and abilities to better help them prepare for successful integrated long term employment.

  2. Use the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) when teaching and designing person centered lesson plans. Referencing the picture above, The first box represents equality where all students are getting the same services, instruction, etc. Think of the needs of the students portrayed in the image. Who is getting their needs met? The middle person is the only one seeing things at the appropriate level. The second box represents equity of education where services and instruction are designed to ensure all students have the same perspective or access to their education. All are seeing at the same perspective, but the extra services or specialized instruction varies by individuals to provide the same view. The third box represents Universal Design for Learning (UDL), in that all barriers are removed for students to always have access regardless of their ability, learning style, or any exceptionality. The purpose of UDL is to remove barriers that might hinder students from progressing.
